A new psychedelic mushroom store called Shroomyz opened in downtown Toronto earlier this year. It sells a variety of mushroom-infused products, including psilocybin-containing gummies, chocolate bars and tea. Its windows are taped off for privacy and customers must buzz in to enter. The shop has a 4.9-star rating on Google and hundreds of positive reviews. Read more

Despite its popularity, the fungus-based products remain illegal in Canada. They are considered Schedule III drugs under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, meaning they can only be sold or possessed by people with a prescription from a doctor. But that’s not stopping shops like the one in Cambridge from popping up, and others in Ottawa, Hamilton, Toronto and Vancouver from establishing themselves as well.

These psilocybin-containing mushrooms are often referred to as shroomies, golden tops or blue meanies and are usually eaten raw or cooked. They are also dried and used as a tea. Health Canada warns that consuming magic mushrooms can cause a person to see, hear or feel things that aren’t there and can lead to anxiety, nausea, muscle twitches and increased heart rate and blood pressure.

Shroomyz’s owner Christian said he believes the popularity of his products is tied to a growing awareness of mental health issues. Research has suggested psilocybin can help ease depression, addiction and PTSD by altering patterns of thought and perception. “It’s a big part of why we opened this place,” he said. “Mental health is a collective issue and we want to make it available to the community.”
